Community service and civic engagement have been hallmarks of Chris’s life. As a natural output of his love of swimming, Chris became a lifeguard, certified by the American Red Cross, guarding the beaches of Long Island Sound, club pools, and teaching swimming.
After moving to Washington, DC in the early 1990s, Chris joined the Whitman Walker Clinic as a volunteer and served in the Buddy program providing support to people living with HIV/AIDS. Chris first worked with a client and then led a Buddy Team of 10-15 other volunteers. Chris and his husband James led the Saturday Cooking Mission at Foundry United Methodist Church, providing nutritious meals for un-housed men and women. Chris and James held this post at Foundry for four years. Chris has also volunteered with Save our Rivers, Habitat for Humanity, and the Casey Tree Foundation.
In Washington and Rehoboth Beach, Chris has leveraged his interests and experience into civic engagement. He served as a Block Captain in the Bloomingdale DC neighborhood for over 20 years, was elected and served as Vice President of the Bloomingdale Civic Association.
After moving to Rehoboth Beach, Chris continued his calling to be civically engaged. In his Country Club Estates neighborhood, Chris and his neighbors grew concerned about speeding and reckless driving, threatening personal safety and the community’s small-town value of peaceful living. Chris took a leadership role, collaborating with the Mayor, Commissioners, Chief of Police, and City Manager to address the issue. Their efforts led to the approval of several infrastructure improvements designed to slow traffic, including the addition of double yellow center lines, single yellow lines around driveways, new speed limit signs, and digital speed readers. These measures successfully calmed traffic and enhanced neighborhood safety.
After this civic engagement, Chris joined the Streets and Transportation Committee to help on similar city issues. He also serves on the Traffic Calming Committee of the Country Club Estates Property Owners Association, and volunteers to maintain the street trees on Munson and State Road. When not working or engaging in community issues, you can find Chris with his husband James walking the streets of Rehoboth Beach with their beloved rescue dog Honey.
Chris received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Environmental Studies from St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY – a combined double major.
After college, Chris moved to Washington, DC and worked for a not-for-profit environmental organization. He transitioned to the private sector and joined the management consultancy Booz Allen Hamilton in 1992. During his tenure at Booz Allen, Chris has worked across a multitude of civilian government agencies including the Department of Interior, Department of Energy, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Chris went back to school in 1998, and got a Master of Urban Planning from the University of Virginia, graduating in 2000 with high honors. At Booz Allen, Chris serves as a Senior Program and Account Manager, leading Booz Allen’s business with the EPA, and overseeing the delivery of work on a broad set of government programs, helping to ensure the highest of quality and client satisfaction.
Chris grew up on the North Shore of Long Island in the Town of Cold Spring Harbor. He spent his youth riding bicycles, playing in the woods, and spending hours and hours at the beach. Beach time included sailing, water skiing, and swimming. He joined the local swim club, competing in meets and grew into a competitive swimmer. In High School he was a four-year Varsity swimmer athlete, with a specialty in the 500 Meter freestyle.
Chris has always enjoyed camping and hiking. In 1994, he completed a "thru-hike" of the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail starting in Georgia and finishing on top of Mount Katahdin in Maine.
